Giving feedback on MusicXML import for braille conversion¶
We are hoping you can help us to identify any remaining issues of the MusicXML import to MakeBraille-Hodder please. These include things such as: missing articulations, missing symbols, missing sections, wrongly translated ornaments, symbols and texts, error of voice placement, staff changes, and wrong translation of other music elements (e.g. SMUFL), etc.
- Please submit short files if possible, ideally a couple of sections of the original score with sufficient context for the issue to be understood by MakeBraille Software (and a human) in context. Please do not create “artificial files” containing just the error, since the converter tool needs more contextual information to convert these accurately. Make sure you use a notation software such as Finale, Sibelius or MuseScore to produce the MusicXML file, even if manual editing is required on the XML files.
- For Sibelius please use the Dolet plugin instead of its native XML export (if no piano hand changes are involved). This ensures that all required MusicXML elements are presented. If piano hand changes are involved, please use Sibelius’ native export (and/or if you can, edit the XML file and mark it up correctly).
- Make sure you include time/key signatures and clef(s).
- Please enter everything in a normal way - don’t use customized symbols and lines, graphics etc. These will not be exported correctly.
- If the error is structure-related, e.g., missing sections and wrong part labelling, please submit the whole piece; if the error is just a wrong translation, it’s better to reproduce it by making a small music clip so that the error can be easily found and focused.
- If the error is a group of missing or wrong translations in the same category (such as a set of missing ornaments), please only include one error per measure.
- Once the error file is prepared, please write a clear description of the issue to report, stating where the issue is, what is it, and what you think the correct braille should be - a Unicode braille file is helpful to show the correct translation.
- Please submit issues. for review. We will check whether the issue is duplicated with any existing issues, and will try to identify whether the issue is definitely caused by the importer, core converter, or whether it is a problem of the MusicXML export itself. We may ask for further information from you before we can take action.
